Joanna Butler

Co-writer

Joanna grew up in Ottawa and has vivid memories of attending the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial, standing shoulder to shoulder with other Canadians, feeling a sense of loss and gratitude for the sacrifice of our military, and pride of country. Her father, now deceased, was a veteran, having served overseas in WW II. She moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1988, with her husband Gordon, and embraced the vibrant music community, performing with the Dalhousie Community Choir, as well as the IWK Health Centre choirs. She likes exploring different genres of music, and co-writing with East Coast songwriters, including Meaghan Smith, and performing on guitar in acoustic House Concerts with Mel Farrimond, Melanie Donnelly, Glenda Pennell and Ann Fearon.

Joanna finds most fulfillment in co-writing meaningful songs that unite people toward a common sense of purpose and has received awards and recognitions for: Stand Together (Great American Song Contest; featured on Martin Luther King Day, Haligonia.ca), and We’ll Find a Way (David Suzuki song for the planet contest; Music with a Conscience). She coordinates the Halifax Chapter of the Songwriters Association of Canada. To see her full music bio and songs, check out joannabutler.ca.
